Amazing!

Teen Decomposes Plastic Bag in Three Months!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plastic takes thousands of years to decompose -- but 16-year-old science fair contestant Daniel Burd made it happen in just three months.

The Waterloo, Ontario high school junior figured that something must make plastic degrade, even if it does take millennia, and that something was probably bacteria.

(Hey, at between one-half and 90 percent of Earth's biomass, bacteria's a pretty safe bet for any biological mystery.)

The Record reports that Burd mixed landfill dirt with yeast and tap water, then added ground plastic and let it stew. The plastic indeed decomposed more quickly than it would in nature; after experimenting with different temperatures and configurations, Burd isolated the microbial munchers. One came from the bacterial genus Pseudomonas, and the other from the genus Sphingomonas.

Burd says this should be easy on an industrial scale: all that's needed is a fermenter, a growth medium and plastic, and the bacteria themselves provide most of the energy by producing heat as they eat. The only waste is water and a bit of carbon dioxide.

Amazing stuff. I'll try to get an interview with this young man who may have managed to solve one of the most intractable environmental dilemmas of our time. And I can't help but wonder whether his high school already had its prom. If he doesn't get to be king, there's no justice in this world.

Perception

Sometimes when I look in the mirror, it feels as though I'm at a carnival, in the fun house with all those twisty mirrors.

I acknowledge that my ego can beat the self image up just as much as it can build it up depending on the day. The problem is that some days it really affects me more than others. Today is just one of those many days.

I've started to actually attempt to exercise more regularly and drinking water to keep myself just barely hydrated. That doesn't sound like much, but you wouldn't believe how dehydrated I'd let myself get!

So, it's not much, but I'm definitely making a commitment to drink 8 glasses of water a day and exercise 3 days a week! Wish me luck!

Pictures!!

I had SO much fun with Reagan!

Amish country is really beautiful, with rolling hills, lots and lots of rolling hills... and then more rolling hills - till it feels like a roller coaster and sometimes it doesn't sit well with your stomach after a while. Still beautiful though!

I sort of love that the Amish wear dark Ozzy sun glasses! They have the best baked goods too!

I was fascinated by this contraption, because, it's not a buggy, and its not a bike - but its BOTH!

I had such a great time in Amish country - really it just deserves more time though. I really missed Mr.T though :(

Happy Mothers Day

Mother Teresa's Favorite Sayings

  • I work for the people, because I feel I must do something.
  • People are generally irrational, unreasonable and selfish. They deserve to be loved, anyway.
  • It's law of nature that the good you do, will be forgotten tomorrow. But the good work must be carried on.
  • Your honesty and frankness will expose you to problems but your work should not stop for it means the world to so many people.
  • Years of your hard work may be destroyed overnight, that should not deter you from building upon your hard work.
  • Despite giving your best to the world, you may be kicked in the teeth. Give the best you've got anyway.
  • Places like Calcutta can be seen all over the world if you have eyes to see.
  • Developed countries suffer from poverty of understanding, poverty of will, of loneliness, of lack of love and spirit. There is no greater disease in the world today than this.
  • When you don't have anything, then you have everything.
  • The person who gives with a smile is the best giver because God loves a cheerful giver.
  • It is not the size of our actions but the amount of love and care that is put into them that matters.
  • You should never lose heart. God is merciful and kind- he has endowed you with the best gift- smile, which can make millions happy.
  • Show kindness through your face, your eyes, your smile and through the warmth of your greetings. You must bear a cheerful smile. Don't only give your care, but give your heart as well.

Before I was a Mom
-
I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday.
Before I was a Mom -
I cleaned my house each day. I never tripped over toys or forgot words to a lullaby. I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about immunizations.
Before I was a Mom -
I had never been puked on - Pooped on - Spit on - Chewed on, or Peed on. I had complete control of my mind and My thoughts. I slept all night.
Before I was a Mom -
I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests...or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.
Before I was a Mom -
I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life
so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.
Before I was a Mom -
I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.
Before I was a Mom -
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay. I had never known The warmth, The joy, The love, The heartache, The wonderment or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom.

This is why I love being a Mom... I'm still ignored when she's too busy dancing too.
